About The Davis Center for Social Justice

Social Justice at Temple Sinai

Temple Sinai has a long history and tradition of making social justice an integral part of the life of the congregation. That storied history continues with the founding of The Davis Center for Social Justice which organizes, supports and strengthens the social justice work of Temple Sinai.

The mission of the Davis Center is to repair the world through bold action, learning, and advocacy and strengthen the sense of community and purpose among Temple Sinai’s members, its partners and the wider community.

Our many programs have provided insights and unique perspectives on a wide variety of topics including reproductive rights, environmental justice, the arrival of migrants to our area, racial justice, and more.  A sampling of our programs over the past year include:

  • We hosted two inspiring Shabbat programs:  one on gun violence prevention with Steve Dettelbach, Director of the ATF, and another featuring Mini Timmaraju, President of NARAL.  These services directly connect our Jewish identity with our deep-seeded roots as a congregation committed to tikkun olam.
  • We have supported refugees through our sponsorship of the Noori family; we have also provided financial support to organizations working directly with the increasing number of vulnerable migrants arriving in our area.

  • Our Davis Center Youth Board has been involved in raising funds for the Capital Area Food Bank and working with our Green Team to enhance our building grounds.

  • We hosted an event with over 60 temple clergy, leaders and members on activating racial equity to affirm our commitment to being an antiracist congregation.

  • Our Green Team has been hard at work planting new trees on our grounds with plans to build a pollinator garden as well.

  • WIN’s ongoing work with our interfaith partners involves affordable housing, climate change and more.

  • We have continued to engage over 300 congregants in our postcard writing efforts to increase voter turnout through our Get Out The Vote campaigns.
